How to create an indicator based on a dataset?

Feed your dashboards by creating an indicator based on a dataset

Updated over 2 years ago

You want to create your first indicator based on a dataset. This article is for you! 👇

In the editing part of your dashboard, go to the Indicators area and click on the "Create an indicator" button.

You have the possibility to create 7 different types of indicators. To learn more, consult the article What are the different types of indicators you can create?

Once you have chosen the type of indicator, the interface for creating your indicator will change to adapt to your needs... /!\ Once your indicator has been saved, you will not be able to modify this step.

Create an indicator based on a dataset

This option allows you to create your indicator by choosing from the list of datasets and contribution forms available on the platform.

Basic settings

  • Name of the indicator (e.g. : annual sales)

  • Unit of measure (e.g. : k€)

  • Description (optional field)

Computation

First select the dataset or form from the list of datasets and forms available on the platform.

Then define your results computation mode. In total, 6 computation modes are available. To illustrate them, let's take an example💁:

"I sign a contract for an amount of 100€ on 01/01, a contract for 35€ on 02/01, a contract for 60€ on 03/01."

  • Sum => result of my indicator = 195€

  • Average => result of my indicator : 65€.

  • Row count => result of my indicator : 3 contracts

  • Last result => result of my indicator : 60€.

  • Minimum => result of my indicator : 35

  • Maximum => result of my indicator : 100€.

Once this decision is taken, the interface will change to adapt to your need...

Except for the "Row count" mode, you will be asked for a specific field and the platform will automatically propose the list of available fields in your dataset.

/!\ The "date" field only appears if the selected dataset has one. We recommend that you systematically fill in a date field. This allows you to create a more accurate and reliable progression curve for your indicator. If there is no date field, the results will be attributed to the date the file was updated on the platform.

Then add as many filters as necessary. The filtering part allows you to select according to certain criteria the values you wish to keep or exclude from the indicator.

A good performance is by default defined as "higher is better". If this is not the case (which is rarely the case), check the "lower is better" option.

You have got three ways to aggregate the results:

  • no aggregation;

  • by team;

  • by role.

To get more information about it, please consult this article: Understanding the different ways to aggregate in the indicators.

Periodicity

By default, the indicator is considered as not periodical. If you wish to customize the periodicity of your indicator, choose the option "Indicator is periodical: follow indicator over regular time intervals (ex: month by month)". For more details on periodicity, see the article How to create a custom periodicity ?

Benchmark and display mode

Select the benchmark mode among the followings: "Compare the score to a goal", "Compare the score to an historical value", or "Don't compare the score". Then select the display mode for your indicator from the proposed templates (absolute, relative, gauge).

⭐ Little tip: Think about "Display a call-to-action" to redirect users to a page where they can improve on this indicator… In this case, be sure to fill in the label and URL of your call-to-action !

Finally, click on "Create" and voilà... You have just created an indicator based on a dataset!

See you soon on Incenteev! 😉
